AMI TECH TIP
TECH TIP NO. 16.004
DATE: 8/17/91
BOARD TYPE: Enterprise II, Series-16
BOARD REVISION: D or D1
BOARD FREQUENCY: 25MHz or 33MHz
ORIGINATOR: Rex Wade
RELEASED BY: Documentation Control
PROBLEM: If the Adaptec 2322D ESDI disk controller is used on the
Enterprise II motherboard and the address of the floppy
controller on the Adaptec card is changed by installing
J10-2 or disabled by installing J10-3 (so that the on-
board floppy disk controller can be used), there will be
problems using the hard disk drives. The problem will
show up during a low-level format. The defect list cannot
be written to track 0.
REASON: There is an I/O address conflict. Addresses 3F0-3F7 (hex)
should be reserved for the floppy disk controller with the
exception of 3F6 (hex) which is a write only port to reset
the hard disk controller. However, the Adaptec disk
controller card reads from address 3F6 (hex) even when the
floppy controller address has been changed or disabled.
This causes a conflict with the on-board floppy disk
controller which responds to any read from the range
3F0-3F7 (hex).
SOLUTION: If the Adaptec 2322D ESDI disk controller card is used,
the floppy controller on the Adaptec card must be used at
it's default address. This will cause the system BIOS to
disable the on-board floppy disk controller which will
eliminate the address conflict. On future revisions of
the Enterprise II (Rev-E), this conflict will be resolved.
